Getting your music playing
A quick guide to adding the song to your light show. No tech experience needed.
The one rule that matters
The lights are timed second by second to one specific version of the song. Streaming apps (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Pandora) will not work: they don’t give you a file, just a stream. You need to buy and download the exact version listed on your sequence. L Designs Plus sells the light sequence only; we never sell or send music.
Buy the song
Use the iTunes Store, Amazon Music (a purchase, not streaming) or Bandcamp: anywhere that lets you download a file. Match the version and length listed on your sequence.
Check it (recommended)
Open the free Design Your Show designer, click 🎵 Sequences, choose your sequence and add your song. It tells you whether the length matches and plays the show on your own house. Your file stays on your computer; nothing is uploaded.
Load it onto your controller
On a computer on the same network, open http://fpp.local/ (or your controller’s IP address), go to Content Setup → File Manager and upload the song next to your sequence. Then in Content Setup → Playlists, pick the song as the sequence’s media and click Save. Full steps: Load your sequence.
Press play
Start the playlist. If the lights and music line up, you’re done!
Common snags
- No sound at all
- The song wasn’t uploaded, or it isn’t picked as the media in the playlist. Re-check step 3.
- Lights drift out of sync as the song plays
- You likely have a different version (remaster, extended or live). Check its length in the designer.
- File won’t play / “unsupported format”
- Convert it to MP3 with a free converter, or contact us and we’ll walk you through it.
- Can I use my Spotify or Apple Music subscription?
- No. Streaming services don’t give you a file. Buy the song (iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp) so you have your own MP3 or M4A.
